We support program design, implementation, and evaluation as a connected process, ensuring that what is created works in classrooms. Our focus is simple: improve teaching and student learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cogent Press provides integrated services in curriculum development, instructional design, implementation, and evaluation. Our approach is structured as a cohesive cycle: we develop curriculum and resources, support their use through professional learning, and evaluate their impact to inform ongoing refinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curriculum and Program Development<\/strong>
<\/strong>We design and develop curriculum and programs aligned with disciplinary standards and jurisdictional requirements. This includes curriculum frameworks, guides, and supporting materials structured for use in classrooms throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructional Design and Learning Resources<\/strong>
<\/strong>We design and produce instructional frameworks and classroom resources, including textbooks, digital learning resources, and supporting materials. Resources are designed for clarity, coherence, and usability, and are tested and refined through classroom use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Learning
<\/strong>We design and facilitate professional learning for teachers and school leaders to support the implementation of curriculum and instructional materials. We also design programs that support ongoing professional growth and instructional effectiveness. This work builds shared understanding and supports consistent use in classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Program Evaluation and Review
<\/strong>We facilitate program evaluation and review, including the development of logic models that align with outcomes-based frameworks. This includes analysis of implementation and support for ongoing refinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Effective programs depend on both sound design and practical classroom use. We maintain alignment between these domains throughout the development process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We work closely with educators, program specialists, and departments to support the development and implementation of curriculum. This includes instructional frameworks, classroom resources, and professional learning that support consistent and effective use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Materials are developed by educators and tested in classrooms as part of an ongoing cycle of refinement. Draft resources are used in real teaching contexts and revised based on teacher professional judgment, student work, and classroom observation. This process identifies how students engage with the material, how their understanding develops, and where adjustments are needed. It ensures that materials are not only carefully crafted, but usable and responsive to the realities of teaching and learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach keeps our work grounded in classroom practice and helps improve both teaching and student learning over time. It also ensures that decisions about curriculum and instruction remain responsible to the students and communities they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darryl Fillier<\/strong>
<\/strong>Publisher<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darryl works in curriculum development, teaching, and educational research, with a focus on social studies, curriculum theory, and instructional design. He has worked as a classroom teacher, school administrator, and program development specialist, and has contributed to the development of multiple textbooks and curriculum guides. His work includes program evaluation aligned with outcomes-based models and logic frameworks. He teaches at the university level in social studies and curriculum theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trudy Porter<\/strong>, PhD
Publisher<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trudy works with teachers and schools to support curriculum implementation and professional learning. Her background includes classroom teaching, school administration, and program development across multiple jurisdictions. She holds a PhD focused on teacher professional growth and change, and her work focuses on how educators adopt, adapt, and sustain effective instructional practices. She teaches at the university level in primary and elementary mathematics and inclusive classroom design, and supports educators in translating curriculum into classroom practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth Siegel<\/strong>
<\/strong>Senior Editor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth works in editorial development, writing, and assessment. She brings extensive experience in children\u2019s publishing, including senior editorial work with a national magazine and educational publishing. In addition, she has authored more than a dozen educational readers, including several for reluctant readers. Her work focuses on shaping content for clarity, coherence, and developmental appropriateness, and ensuring the production of high-quality learning materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy Flight-Dawe<\/strong>
<\/strong>Associate Publisher<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy leads language adaptation work, supporting the parallel development of materials in English and French. Her work focuses on ensuring that resources are accurate, accessible, and effective across both French first-language and second-language (immersion) contexts. She brings a strong understanding of French language education, helping ensure that materials are appropriate for learners at different levels of proficiency and aligned with how French is taught in classrooms. Amy supports projects from initial design through to final production, maintaining clarity and coherence across languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erin Walsh<\/strong>
<\/strong>Associate Publisher<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erin works in language education, social studies, and curriculum development, with a focus on resource design and formative assessment. She has worked as a classroom teacher, English department head, and program specialist, and has contributed to the development of curriculum guides and supplemental resources. She brings expertise on how curriculum is implemented in practice, ensuring that resources are accessible, instructionally sound, and effective for diverse learners and teaching contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
